Twenty Plus Ten – Mark Quartermain
Leadership Experience:
As a senior executive with a major energy company, Mark Quartermain’s final roles of his full-time career were running Global Commodity Supply & Trading divisions. Before that he had leadership roles in Strategy, Business Development, Finance and Supply and has prior experience in Manufacturing. He’s been particularly successful at making necessary culture change happen in organisations he’s led. So, he’s “been there” at the sharp end of business management and across all parts of the value chain.
Board Experience:
Mark has held Executive Directorships in businesses in the US, the Netherlands, the Bahamas and the UK where he gained specific insight into the demands of the regulators. He has also served as a NED of a company at a critical time in the transformation of its business model and has also served on the Board of an NFP charity where he got first-hand experience of dealing with governance issues. So, he’s “been there” in the Board room in both ‘for-profit’ and NFP organisations.
Personal USP:
A cornerstone of Mark’s career is commerciality. He has successfully run trading businesses in incredibly challenging market and geopolitical environments. Factors in that success have included:
i. a focus on competitive advantage and fundamental analysis,
ii. proportionate oversight and monitoring of risks,
iii. ensuring that a profitable and growing end-to-end business does not compromise safety, code-of-conduct and regulatory compliance boundaries.
But his hallmark has been uniting others internally – both horizontally with functions and vertically across value chains – towards a common goal. He understands that any business is about its people and that you need to listen carefully and absorb others’ perspectives to succeed, particularly when it comes to change management.
Motivation:
He’s held over 20 years of Leadership roles plus over 10 years of Board positions. Mark is now focused in putting something back. To this end he has recently been awarded the Advanced Professional Diploma in Non-Executive Directorships. These studies were geared to supporting his practical Board experience with some theoretical backbone and have immediately helped Mark provide incisive business advice/mentoring to Directors of small, local companies.
Through his Twenty Plus Ten Board Advisory work, he believes his experience can particularly serve public and private companies exposed to domestic and international challenges and commercial risks.
